We have been providing safe, affordable housing to families in Northern and Southern California—San Francisco, Oakland, and LA—for over 65 years. Yet, Mosser’s success over the years is not just about providing an authentic living experience, it’s also about being a community steward.
It’s what Mosser’s founder, Charles Mosser, called, “the Mosser Magic.” It means always striving to improve the neighborhoods we serve. We take a hands-on approach to the community because it is our community—and we care deeply about it. Our goal is to continue to be good community stewards, lead by example, and partner with the community to make them better than we found them.
We have been doing it for decades. For example, in the 1970s Mosser invested in a full block in the Western Addition in San Francisco with over 117 apartments. At that time, the neighborhood was run-down, and many questioned the move. But Charles Mosser saw great potential to improve the community for the benefit of the residents and the neighborhood. And that is exactly what he did.
Over time, Mosser transformed the block into Frederick Douglas Plaza, providing safe, clean, and affordable housing options for both existing residents and future residents — including the Mosser family, which has lived in a Mosser property for three generations.
Today the Western Addition is among the top 10 neighborhoods to live in San Francisco, noted for its dense urban feel and thriving, diverse community. Similar examples can be found all over the Bay Area and continue to this day. Neveo Mosser, and the rest of the Mosser family, continue to serve their home community through philanthropy, and support for community organizations like the African American Cultural Center, The Tenderloin Museum, and the SF YMCA., as well as investing in housing accessibility and partnering with housing advocacy organizations.
At Mosser, building better communities is part a key part of our mission. And given the challenges we all face, we believe that mission is more important than ever before!
